The dog just refuses to go anywhere else.
A very dedicated dog continued to show his loyalty, looking serious six years after his owner’s death.
Captain, a German shepherd, apparently ran away from his owner, Miguel Guzman, who died in 2006. A week later, the family found the dog sitting next to Guzman’s tomb in central Argentina.
Miguel Guzman adopted Captain in 2005, as a gift for his teen son, Damian. For the past six years, Captain has continued to stand guard at the tomb of Miguel. The family said that the dog rarely leaves the site.
“We looked, but he was gone,” said the widow, Veronica Guzman.
“We thought it must have been run over and killed. The following Sunday we went to the cemetery, and Damian recognized his pet. Captain approached us, barking and moaning like he was crying. Capitan was never at the cemetery before it was discovered there. It’s a mystery how he managed to find the place,” she said.
Cemetery director Hector Baccega said that he and his team have begun to feed and care for Captain.
“He came here one day, all on his own, and began to wander around the cemetery until he finally found the grave of his master,” Baccega said.
“During the day, sometimes he will walk around in the cemetery, but it always goes back to the grave. Every day, at six, he lies down on top of the grave, where it stays all night,” he said.
The Guzman family has not abandoned Captain. Damian said the family has tried to bring home Captain several times, but he always returns to the cemetery alone.
“I think it will be there until it dies, too. He takes care of my father,” he said.
