Who’d put their shirt on Cristiano Ronaldo returning to Old Trafford? David Moyes, apparently.
Real Madrid insist the former Manchester United winger is not for sale, and their unofficial mouthpiece, Spanish daily Marca, recently carried a front page story claiming he had committed himself to a new long-term contract at the Bernabeu.
But that didn’t stop Moyes leaving Ronaldo’s old No 7 shirt without a name next to it when United went public with their squad list for the season.
Last season’s owner Antonio Valencia evidently found the pressure of filling it inhibiting and asked for a switch to 25.
With no-one else laying claim to an iconic jersey first made famous by George Best, Moyes left it up for grabs – in the hope, no doubt, that Ronaldo might yet be tempted to carry on where he left off when he quit Manchester for Madrid in a world record deal.
